Condolence From: Peter O'Brien
Condolence: Ed,
I was living on Crescent View Avenue in the early 1960's. I attended Cape Elizabeth Junior High for the 7th and 8th grades. I remember you and Two Lights with fond memories. Presently I live in Fryeburg and often spend time at the park when I'm in Portland. I feel the beauty that I had experienced as a boy when I'm here, visually it looks the same. The rocks and the view from Richmond Island to the fog whistle for the east tower are timeless. I've thought of those early days on every visit, I recall an enthusiasm for what was being created here that I associate with both you and your father. I have these memories as a gift from your father. I am forever grateful.

On a glorious day this past summer a group of Buddhist monks were having a picnic out in front of the bunker. A man fished off the rocks. I was just happy to be there. I thought of your father and was thankful for the good work that he had done.

Respectfully,
Peter O'Brien

Condolence: To Ed's family:

So sorry to hear of your Dad's passing this week. I've worked as a ranger at Baxter State Park for several decades, almost all of that time posted at either Chimney Pond or Russell Pond. Both locations were familiar to Ed, either as a work station or as a destination for his team of donkeys. As I'd hike in to start my work shift every week, I was well aware that I was treading in Ed's footsteps, and often wished that his donkeys were still around, so that I could lighten my own load! Those early rangers at Baxter definitely left a legacy for the rest of us to live up to.

I'm sorry for you for his loss, but happy for you that you had such a wonderful gift in your life for such a long time.

Best wishes,

Brendan Curran

Condolence: The wonderful folks at ElderCare, founded by Dr. Chip Teel, brought me, along with many other volunteers, in contact with a fascinating and loving man as he struggled to live the end of his long life in his own home with dignity and compassion. As I drove Ed to his weekly cribbage games at the Wiscasset Community Center he often expressed his gratitude toward Chip, Carol, et.al. who worked so tirelessly to make Ed's last years so meaningful and safe. He also expressed great appreciation for the love and help he received from Sandy and Dan, and from Arthur who predeceased Ed by just a few weeks. God bless you, Ed.

Condolence: Park staff are saddened to hear of the passing of Ed Werler. During is time at Chimney Pond, Ed helped build the foundation of what we consider to be the Park "family" of rangers and staff.
Ed found such a happy home in the Katahdin region because his strong work ethic, resourcefulness, and unremitting positive and friendly attitude so exemplified the people of Baxter Park and Katahdin.
Rest in Peace, Ed.

Condolence: Dear Eddie and Cathy,

My wife and I were saddened to learn of your father's death this week. Please know that we are thinking of you and sending you our heartfelt sympathy.

To bury your parent is to bury a substantial part of your past -- and that is a significant loss.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

In sorrow and with love,
