Obituary for Marilyn Mohr

Marilyn M. Mohr passed away on March 30, 2017 at the age of 94 from complications of dementia. For the past few years she has resided in the memory care unit of Maine General Rehabilitation and Long Term Care at Glenridge in Augusta, ME.

Marilyn was born in Passaic, NJ to Dr. Leonard M. and Gertrude Timmis Matthews. She spent her childhood and attended school in Passaic, graduating from Passaic Collegiate School in 1941. She attended Skidmore College. As a teen, her summers were spent at Christmas Cove, South Bristol, ME with her family on "Little Island" (Tea Island). She enjoyed playing tennis and sailing.

Marilyn met her future husband, Walter "Budd" Mohr as an older teenager when the two attended the same ballroom dancing classes. They were married in 1943 at the First Congregational Church in Passaic. While Budd was in the Army deployed to Europe in WWII, Marilyn served as a nurse's aide in Passaic.

After the war, Marilyn and Budd's lives were limned by his career with Scott Paper Company, moving from Springfield, PA to Terrace Park, OH, to Media, PA, and the arrival and rearing of three children. Several years after Budd's retirement, the two moved to West Boothbay Harbor, ME, and after Budd's death in 2003, Marilyn moved to her beloved family home, "The Homestead," in South Bristol.

Marilyn loved family gatherings, particularly Christmas, with its' bright lights, gifts, and decorations, and clambakes on the Fourth of July at Little Island. She was an accomplished seamstress making clothing, draperies and bedspreads. She stitched innumerable cross stitch quilts and wall hangings. Marilyn enjoyed gardening in her rock garden at The Homestead. She was an avid reader and enjoyed writing letters to friends near and far. Her favorite spot to sit and watch the world go by was on the deck at The Homestead.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Budd; and brother, Edward C. Matthews.

She is survived by daughter Wendy L. Parker (Robert) of Kennett Square, PA; two sons, Stephen B. Mohr (Tanya) of Peaks Island, ME and Stewart M. Mohr (Geraldine) of Bozeman, MT; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren (and two more due this summer); sister in-law, Priscilla Matthews of Nobleboro, ME; nieces, Ann Sowles (Peter) of Cumberland Foreside, ME and Meredith Matthews (Larry Baker) of Farmington, NM; and nephew, Meyric Matthews of Lincolnville, ME.

The family would like to express deep appreciation for the care Marilyn received from the staff on the memory care unit at Glenridge and from Androscoggin Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Damariscotta River Association, 110 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta, ME 04543; or the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, PO Box 77, Edgecomb, ME 04556. At Marilyn's request, there will be a private memorial service at a later date in Christmas Cove.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for the family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com.
