Obituary for Monica Yeakel-Thompson

Monica Yeakel-Thompson
Monica L. Simmons Whitfield Yeakel Thompson, 58 of Damariscotta, passed away on the morning of April 25th, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 12, 1959 in Damariscotta, she was the daughter of Rig and Charlotte Simmons. Growing up, she lived in Damariscotta, Alexandria, VA and Bristol, before moving back to Damariscotta and graduating from Castner School and Lincoln Academy.

Throughout her life, Monica had lived in many different places, including San Antonio, TX, Cape Coral, FL and of course her beloved Maine. She loved to travel, and had visited Peru several times, Haiti where she “adopted” two children, and recently took a great trip to Costa Rica.

Throughout her working career she was a CNA, taught at the Montessori School when it was still in Damariscotta, for many years worked at Tidewater Telecom, and even taught latched rug hooking. Most recently she owned and operated First Class Florals and All the Comforts in Damariscotta. The shop will live on with help from her husband, Guy, and Roy Blomquist.

Monica was very creative and talented. She could knit; and sold some of her things in her shop, but gave even more of her creations away for free. She would decorate anything, could wallpaper, made pottery, painted, made jewelry, and even took up glass blowing...there was nothing she couldn’t do, or wouldn’t try.

She loved animals, and always had cats, dogs and horses. She was an avid gardener; raising a garden every year and canning the bounty. She loved Louds Island, fishing, summer, and simply spending time with her friends and family.

Throughout the years, she attended the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle, and the Damariscotta Baptist Church, and sang in the choirs of each. She was also a member of a local choir here in midcoast Maine.

Monica was an incredibly kind and heartfelt person. Very quietly, she helped many people who needed a hand, whether it be a one-time thing, or some ongoing help. She would send flowers to funerals of total strangers to her, because she thought everyone deserved flowers at their funeral.

She was predeceased by her grandparents, Ross and Mildred Hanley, and Lowell Simmons and Flora Worthley Simmons Weeks Orne.

She is survived by her son, Kory Whitfield; her parents, Rig and Charlotte Simmons; husband, Guy Thompson; one grandson, Myles Whitfield; three siblings, Vicki Nichols, Lowell Simmons, and Scott Simmons and their respective families; as well as countless others who she helped bring up, was always there for, and loved unconditionally.

A memorial service to remember Monica’s life will be held at 11:00am, on Tuesday, May 2nd at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle. The Rev. Richard Newell will officiate. Donations in Monica’s memory may be made to: The Monica Yeakel Thompson Youth Scholarship Fund, ℅ Oceans Wide, PO Box 797, Newcastle, ME 04553.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for her family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com
