Louis L. Doe, 90, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of May 1st at his home in Newcastle. Born in Sheepscott on February 9, 1927, he was the son of Arthur and Estella (Leighton) Doe.

Louis grew up on Kings Highway in Sheepscott, attending local schools and graduating from Lincoln Academy in 1945. He served in the United States Air Corps from 1947 - 1950, and upon his honorable discharge, attended and graduated from Husson University with his degree in Business.

He would later become a Master Plumber, and in the late 1960’s started a plumbing and heating business on upper Main Street in Newcastle. While running his business, he hired Judith Lang, and the two would eventually marry. In 1970, Louis and Judy started Louis Doe Home Center, and together they perfected the formula for a successful marriage and business.

In 1973, he was one of the founding members of Damariscotta Bank & Trust, and served on it’s board for many years. He was a long-time member of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Lions Club, and was the last surviving original member of Jake’s Rangers.

Louis was an avid avid hunter well into his 70’s. He enjoyed gardening, both vegetable and beautiful rose gardens, and he loved animals, particularly his labs. More than anything, he loved his time at the store, and enjoyed conversing and getting to know all of his customers.

He is survived by his daughter, Ellen McFarland and husband Harvey; son, Mark Doe and wife Tara; daughter, Jennifer Mitkus and husband Jared; daughter, Lisa Woodrow; four grandchildren, Lindsey, Scott, Ben and Abi; two great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
