Obituary for Nancy Gove

Nancy Ellen (MacLeod) Gove, 76, went to be with her Heavenly Father on the morning of May 16, 2017, after a long-time battle with pulmonary disease. She was born in Detroit, MI on April 19, 1941 to John Crawford MacLeod and Helen Paine (Savage) MacLeod.

Once moving to Massachusetts, she graduated from Melrose High School and Boston University with a degree in vocal music. She performed with the Handel and Hayden Society in Boston for several years, the Polymnia Choral Society, the Assabet Valley Master Singers, and as a church soloist and chorus member. She belonged to several community theater groups in Massachusetts and played lead roles in Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music, Oklahoma, and others.

After having two sons, Edward John Gove and Scott Alan Gove, Nancy went back to school and received her nursing certificate. She worked for 20 years at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, MA, in the Department of Neurosurgery under the tutelage of Harold Wilkinson, MD, PhD.

Nancy moved to Damariscotta in 2001 to be closer to her family. While living in Maine, she worked at St. Andrew’s Hospital in Boothbay until she became ill. In August of 2014, Nancy moved to Dionne Commons Assisted Living in Brunswick, ME where she made many new friends.

She loved to race Porsches, and enjoyed knitting, reading and swimming.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Patricia MacLeod; and a son, Edward “Ted” Gove who passed away in 2002.

She is survived by her loving son, Scott and his beautiful wife, Christine Gove of Damariscotta; four grandchildren, Edward and Meaghan Gove of Pontiac, IL, and Christopher and Baker Gove of Damariscotta; Darby McKinney of Damariscotta, who Nancy thought of as a granddaughter; as well as many good friends.

A time to gather with her family and friends, will be held from 10:00am-12:00pm, on Wednesday, May 24th at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME. A memorial service will follow the gathering at 12:00 noon, also at the funeral home.
