Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" House

Elizabeth “Betty” House, 83, lifelong resident of South Bristol, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 11th, at the Sussman House in Rockport. Born on September 24, 1933 in Damariscotta, she was the daughter of L. Stanley and Emma (Turner) Alley.

Betty attended South Bristol schools and graduated from South Bristol High School. Upon graduation, she started working at the local telephone company, before she and her husband Buddy started operating the local fish market. She also worked for Island Grocery, and later opened her own store on Thompson Inn Road. For many years, she also opened and cleaned summer cottages throughout the area.

She was a long-time member of the Eastern Star, as well as the Union Congregational Church of South Bristol. Later in life, she worked at the church’s thrift shop which she truly loved doing.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Reginald “Buddy” House; brothers, “Junior” Lewis Stanley Alley, and Clifford Alley; and a sister, Esther Chapman.

She is survived by sons, Reggie and his wife Kelley of Walpole, and Leland and his wife Patti of South Bristol; grandchildren, Andrew and companion Amy of Walpole, Nathaniel and wife Kendall of Nobleboro, and Nicholas of Boothbay Harbor; great-grandson, Lewis V. House; special nieces, Kimberly, Britt, and Taylor Alley and their families; step-grandchildren, Vaughn, Lateasha and Athena; as well as numerous cousins near and far.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00am, on Saturday, September 23rd, at the West Bristol Cemetery in Walpole, where she will be laid to rest with her husband. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Union Congregational Church of South Bristol, PO Box 59, South Bristol, ME 04568.
