Glenwood “Glenn” Paye, 88 of Newcastle, passed away on the afternoon of September 20th at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta after a long illness. Born in Tupper Lake, NY on April 24, 1929, he was the only son of Madeline Paye Donaldson.

While Glenn was in the Tupper Lake school system, he earned athletic letters in five sports. He was captain of the football team, receiving several State honors and a scholarship to West Virginia University. He played some semi=pro and pro football and hockey. He joined the U.S. Air Force, where he also played on the Air Force team.

In August of 1952, he married Myrna Stetten in Rochester, NY. Before his discharge in 1954, he was a tailgunner on a B-36. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended Utah State University of a football scholarship.

In 1960, Glenn moved his young family to Highland Mills, NY where he became Personnel and Safety Supervisor for a commuter bus line. Then years later, an opportunity arose for him to form his own construction company, Academy Construction, specializing in slate and copper work. Much of the work was done at West Point.

Glenn retired to Maine in 1989, where he became very active in the American Legion. He worked his way up the ranks, working on many committees, becoming 2nd Vice Commander, 1st Vice Commander and in 2001-2002 the State Commander. He was also National Executive Committee Alternate.

His favorite pastimes were the American Legion, hunting, playing cribbage, and riding his Honda Gold Wing.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Myrna Paye of Newcastle; his daughter, Glenda of Newfoundland, PA; his son, Jeff of Newcastle; and his granddaughter, Melanie Amos of Narrowsburg, NY.

A gathering, and Legion service, was held on Sunday, September 24th at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta. He will be laid to rest with military honors at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
