Obituary for Patricia "Patty" Grant

Patricia E. “Patty” Grant, 77 of Edgecomb, passed away at her home on the afternoon of January 4th, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 7, 1940, in North Conway, NH, she was the daughter of Daniel and Evelyn Munroe.

Patty spent her younger years in North Conway where she loved to ski and skate. She moved to Maine as a teenager, where she attended Lincoln Academy and married Lester Douglas Schmal at the age of 16. The couple moved to North Carolina while her husband served in the United States Marine Corps, and upon moving back to Maine she raised their three children and worked at Sylvania.

In 1964, she packed up her children and moved to California where she married the love of her life, Dale G. Grant and worked at Borgwarner. After two years in California, they moved back to Maine where they welcomed another son to the family, and would purchase the house Patty lived in for the next 51 years. Patty worked at the Wiscasset Inn, and later The Ledges Inn for 22 years, before successfully running Patty’s Place, a restaurant in Wiscasset for 10 years. She later operated Patty’s Seafood, a food takeout stand outside her home on Route One in Edgecomb for over 14 years. People came from all around for Patty’s seafood baskets, and her famous potato salad which was her grandmother’s recipe. Her generosity while in the restaurant business, to those who needed it, never went unnoticed.

Patty was an incredibly hard worker all her life, and while working any of her restaurant jobs, could also be found working around her house, or taking care of the elderly as part of a home health team. She was always thinking of others, and until the day she passed was worried about her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, shopping and her pool, but more than anything she loved her family.

Besides her mother, and father who passed away during WWII, she was predeceased by her husband, Dale G. Grant; her son, Dale E. Grant; four brothers, Daniel Munroe, Mark Munroe, Edward Munroe and James Munroe; and a nephew, Mark Munroe.

She is survived by her three children, Douglas Jesse Schmal and his wife Shelley of Wiscasset, Matthew James “Jimmy” Schmal of Edgecomb, and Cynthia “Cindy” M. Cheney and her husband Mark of Pemaquid; seven grandchildren, Matthew J. Schmal, Jr., Douglas A. Schmal, Martin J. Koughan, Samuel S. Schmal, Brooke E. Cheney, Mariah R. Koughan, and Tyler G. Cheney; three great-grandchildren, Nolan R. Schmal, Lila R. Schmal, and Chloe M. O’Brian; companion of over 20 years, Rowland Gilbert; as well as many friends, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service for Patty will be held at 1pm, on Saturday, January 13th at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street in Damariscotta. She will be laid to rest privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wiscasset Ambulance, 51 Bath Road, WIscasset, ME 04578; or Meals on Wheels, 521 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
