Obituary for Margaret Louise Kubie

Margaret (Madel) L. Kubie, 98 of Newcastle, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Friday, March 16th, surrounded by family and friends at The Lincoln Home in Newcastle. Born on February 9, 1920 in Cliffside Park, NJ, she was the only daughter of five children born to Carl K. Mutze and Frederike (Pfanakuche) Mutze.

She spent her early childhood in Cliffside Park and Harrington Park, NJ. After high school, she attended a business school and worked as a secretary for a lawyer in Laredo, TX, as well as a principal in the Vernon Township school system.

Madel married “the boy next door” in 1942. Woodrow (Woodie) W. Kubie and Madel shared 58 years of a wonderful married life until his passing in the year 2000. Madel & Woodie started their married life in Laredo, TX while he was in the Army Air Corp. They moved back to New Jersey and lived in various towns in Bergen County before moving to Sandy Creek, Bridgton, ME in 1958 where they sold real estate for two years.

Returning to New Jersey in 1960, they lived in Highland Lakes and Vernon. Upon Woodie’s semi-retirement, they opened an antique business in a converted barn on their property. They also enjoyed camping, and traveled throughout the country doing antique shows, and visiting family and friends.

Madel was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Bridgton Grange. She was feisty, opinionated, had a quick wit, but cared about and loved everyone.

They spent seven years in Boothbay Harbor, ME where they had an antique & gift shop in the summer, and wintered in Florida exploring the sunshine state with their camper. They transitioned year-round to Sebring, FL and opened The Kris Kringle shop on the Sebring Circle.

Madel & Woodie enjoyed sailing on Highland Lake, golfing in Sebring, playing pinochle with a group of friends, square dancing, traveling and spending time with family. They loved people, and were always happy to help anyone in need. Madel was an avid reader, and during her later years at the Lincoln Home enjoyed bingo & Wii bowling.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her four brothers, Herbert Mutze, William Mutze, Carl Mutze & Bernhard Stahl.

She leaves behind three children, Sandra (Kubie) Anderson & husband Robert of Walpole, ME, Carl Kubie & wife Mary of Greentown, PA, and Kim Kubie and wife Antoinette of Matamoras, PA; grandchildren, Peter Anderson, Jim Anderson, Tim Kubie, Marian Kubie, Jennifer Reed, Steven Kubie, Anna Alvarez, Joseph Kubie, Christina Kubie, and Kimberly Kubie; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Brandon Bonney, Gregory Anderson, Abigail, Matthew & Jordan Anderson, Aidan and Austin Kubie, Juliana & Brett Reed, Eliana Alvarez, Landon, Jemma & Maddox Kubie, and Catalina Kubie; as well as many nieces and nephews.

At her request there will be a celebration of her life at 2:00pm, on Friday April 6 at the Lincoln Home, 22 River Road, Newcastle, ME. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to either The Lincoln Home, 22 River Road, Newcastle, ME 04553; or Skidompha Library, 184 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
