Obituary for Jean Harris

Jean N. Harris
Artist, Watercolor teacher, "Gentle Paintings"

Jean N. Harris, 85 of Damariscotta, formerly of Newcastle, passed away on the evening of March 20th at the LincolnHealth - Miles Campus in Damariscotta. The daughter of Martin and Evagene Nelson, Ms. Harris was born in Milwaukee, WI on July 7, 1932. She married Richard Harris, who passed away in May of 2017.

Jean taught watercolors for a number of years, and exhibited and taught locally at Round Top Center for the Arts, the Pemaquid Art Gallery, River Arts, and in galleries throughout the mid-coast.

After a career in advertising and copywriting in New Orleans, Jean began painting and teaching art full time in the mid-1960s. Beginning as an instructor, she became the Director of Gove House, an arts and crafts school in Coconut Grove, FL.

In 1976, Jean and Richard moved to Maine. Her work at Round Top Center for the Arts led to an inspiring progression of group classes including the 'Pleine Aire Art Group' and 'Pot luck Painters'. She took part in many juried exhibits, both nationally and in New England.

She was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, National Watercolor Society, and The New England Watercolor Society. Jean was socially proactive, was an active member of Senior College, and attended Midcoast Friends Meetings.

Per Jean’s wishes, there will be no service at this time. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for her family may be expressed by visiting:
