Obituary for Karin Crawford

Karin Crawford
Karin M. Crawford, 88, of Edgecomb, Maine, passed away peacefully at her home on the morning of August 14th. Born in Stockholm, Sweden on October 13, 1929, she was the only child of the late Alfred and Verna Carlson.

Growing up in Sweden, she split her time between school and city life in Stockholm and pursuing summer adventures on Myrholmen in the skerries, with her friends. She left home to study at the Sorbonne in Paris at 17, where she met her first husband Pierre-Jean Truc. They lived in Marseille and Tahiti where he died in a SCUBA diving accident.

As a young widow on a South Seas island, she met a dashing sailor, Jim Crawford, who was sailing around the world. She sailed away with him and they later got married. Their first child, Carita, was born in Brisbane, Australia along the way. Upon their return to the U.S. they had their second child, Eric, while living in Sarasota, Florida and planning their next sailing adventures aboard Angantyr, whose construction they supervised while living in Vegesack, Germany. When their third child, Per, was on the way they chose to set up home base in Easton, Maryland in 1965. They raised the children in Easton while continuing to cruise the Atlantic basin until Jim passed away in 1986.

Widowed again, Karin built her sanctuary in the woods in Edgecomb, Maine, where she lived for the rest of her life enjoying visits from friends and family, tending her beloved gardens and enjoying the company of her pets and the wildlife around her.

In 1992 she was very proud to become a US citizen.

She was an active supporter of Al-Anon, and often helped with translations with her multilingual skills.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Carita Crawford-Keene (Mike Keene) of Wittman, Maryland; Eric Crawford (Ellen) of Easton, Maryland; and Per Crawford (Sydni) of Eastsound, Washington; and her four grandchildren: Edward Crawford of Denver, Colorado, Emily Crawford of Washington, DC, Eleanora Keene of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Olivia Keene, of Mount Vernon, Washington.

Karin was a generous supporter of many charities for animals of all kinds. Any donations in her honor should be made to the animal charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for her family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com.
