Helen Louise Bryant Nyboe, 93 years young, of Round Pond, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 16, 2018 at the LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta. She was born in Newcastle on August 19, 1925 to her parents Evelyn Burnham and Lawrence Bryant.

Helen grew up in Damariscotta and attended Castner Grammar School, and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1943. She worked with her sister Jennie at Poland’s Drug Store, and then took a position at BIW during the war as a timekeeper with her friend and classmate Arlene Webster.

Helen met her husband-to-be, Kenneth Nyboe (a summer boy from Brooklyn, NY) at a Lakehurst dance in 1942. They married on February 24, 1946 after Ken returned from serving overseas in the army. With Orono as their new home while Ken attended the University of Maine on the GI bill, Helen took a job in the admissions department and received an honorary degree. In 1950, after Ken received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, he accepted a job with the U.S. Department of Navy as a civilian in Washington D.C. They moved to Alexandria,Virginia. In 1955 they started to replant their roots back in Maine with the purchase of a small piece of land in Round Pond where “The Cottage” was to be built. The young boys in town were instrumental in the construction of this building. Ken and Helen mentored their young crew and added to their skill-set that summer with hard work being put in by every member involved.

After 10 years of marriage, their first child Mark Edward was born in 1955 and Michael Scott arrived in 1962. Summers allowed Helen to stay in Round Pond while Ken traveled from Virginia whenever he could. Roy and Ann Evans moved in next door in Virginia while Helen was in Maine during the summer of 1957. Ken made fast friends with the new neighbors and brought them to stay for two weeks in Maine and Helen had yet to meet them. A few years later they bought property up the lane and have been extraordinary members of the extended family since.

Helen orchestrated wonderful times in Round Pond – water skiing in the harbor, trips to the islands of Muscongus Bay, fishing trips with family and friends, picnics at Nason Park, Fourth of July parades, Helen’s birthday breakfasts and thousands of other memorable events that will be remembered by young and old thru the years. She was a member of the Helping Hands of Round Pond and after Ken’s death in 1993, she assisted her sister Jennie Weeks in Wiscasset as a docent at the Nickels - Sortwell House. She enjoyed her home in Round Pond and loved the morning sunrise and looking out on “the pot of gold” on the harbor. The kids of the 1950’s thru the 1980’s in Round Pond can attest to the impact she made on their youth.

She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Kenneth Edward Nyboe; brothers, Floyston “Bo” Bryant and Phillip Bryant; and sisters, Shirley West and Jennie Weeks.

She is survived by her son, Mark of Farmington; and son, Michael and daughter-in-law Charlotte of South Bristol.

A Celebration of Helen’s life will take place on Saturday, October 27 from 12 noon to 4 p.m., at the 1812 Farm in Bristol Mills. Please join the family as they celebrate a life well lived.
