Condolence: "Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying..."

My dear sister Ellen was an exceptional lady. Her death has left a hole in my heart that will not be filled. My hope comes from my faith, which assures me that she is, indeed, in the loving arms of God and we will meet again.

Condolence: We are still trying to get our head around the idea of life without Ellen. When I think of her and the church, I think of the Stone Arch Bridge just below the dam. She was a major stone that held up that bridge. The church will have to find a way to continue on without her. She was definitely a class act. Ron, I certainly hope you will be able to continue to lead us as we all give support to you.

Condolence: Rena and Myself are extending our condolences for
the loss to her family. Ron, especially since when you lived in Northfield, attended the Congregational church and Ellen worked with me, Ed Finch, and you frequently played golf. You were a fun couple and Ellen tried to get me to behave myself while doing the accounting at the church. These are great memories. If you are in Northfield sometime, please pay us a visit.
