Obituary for Henry Barstow

Henry H Barstow, 85, passed away on October 29th at his home in Bristol. Born on April 16, 1933 in Ellsworth, Maine, he was the son of the late Henry and Olive Kealiher Barstow.

Henry grew up in the Damariscotta-Newcastle, Maine area. He attended Franklin Grammar school and Lincoln Academy before joining the US Marine Corp in 1951 during the Korean War. He left the Corp in 1954, and worked at various places as an auto mechanic before settling in as a self employed carpenter and property caretaker, which he remained until retiring in 1998. He also provided crane service and septic tank pumping service for the area during many of the years. After retiring, he and his late wife Alice would spend and enjoy their winters in Florida, having made a new circle of friends there.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Alice Benner Barstow; his children, Holly and Michael Barstow; their mother, Eudora Gamage Barstow; former wife, Helen Sproul Barstow and her daughter Susan Sproul Taylor Nordbeck; sister, Beatrice Lowden; half siblings, Carlton, Kenneth and Esther Taylor; and step-grandson, Christopher Benner.

He is survived by his grandsons, Jamie Barstow (and friend Renee Grover) and Chris Barstow (and friend Caitlyn Newbegin) (both of son Michael Barstow); sister, Edna Verney; step-children from his wife Alice: Sheila Greiff (her children Matthew and Nicole Greiff), Edward Benner and his wife Terri (their children Stephanie Vincentsen and husband Todd, Matt Benner and wife Leigh, Joe Benner (and friend Sheila McLain), Robert Benner (and friend Becky Giles), Thomas Benner (and friend Megan Peabody), Larry Benner and his wife Karen (their children Ashlee and Kyle Benner), Dean Benner (his children Amy Smith , Erica Yantzer and her husband James), Valerie Clark (her children Corey and Kendra Clark), Vicky Williams and her husband Brian (their children Sean, Amanda, Darren, Allison and Stephen Williams) and Alice Parlin (her children Derrick Parlin and wife Vanessa, Jamie Parlin and wife Olivia); stepson, Richard Sproul Jr (son of Helen Sproul Barstow); step-grandsons, David and Gregg Taylor (sons of Susan Nordbeck); many step-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 9th at 2:00pm at the Bristol Congregational Church. A celebration of life will follow in the Russell Parish House.
