UNCLE SAM

I so well remember when we were young, and we spent part or all of our summers on Cottage Point. There were a lot of us: myself and my 2 siblings Billy and Midge. There were the "Smith girls (Ginny, Lorraine, and Margie)" and their brother Robert.  There was Wayne and Carol.  A constant was always Bev, Deb, Chris, and Fran. And of course there were the adults who had the task of making sure we stayed out of any trouble.

UNCLE SAM was the person we could count on for fun. The first boat ride I remember ever taking was on his 20 foot oak dory which I believe he referred to as  "wheeze and sneeze". This was later exchanged for my dad's motor boat. Sam made sure that boat was always gassed up and ready for him to take us water skiing.  There were times he  "scolded" us for doing tricks on the skis, but he always had a twinkle in his eye and seemed so proud we were adventurous.  I never remember him having a harsh or judgmental tone, even though I’m sure we may have deserved it (once in awhile).   On the mud flats, when the adults dug for clams, he showed us how to pour salt into the razor clam holes.  This made them pop out of their holes, And so we collected and later ate them!  I remember the late evenings playing Mah Jong with Sam and family, while we all tried (or made suggestions on how) to prefect making "Jiffy Pop" without burning it.. And I remember  the evenings at the LNC putting together the papers so that they could be mailed out the next day.

I was always amazed that Uncle Sam seemed to be able to do anything: from fixing a boat, building a floating dock, building a cottage, building a sea wall, tarring a roof, raising chickens and "magically" making sure they were "headless" before cooking, and keeping all the machines at the LCN going strong.

Some of my happiest childhood memories were at Cottage Point with Uncle Sam and Auntie Abbie, my family, my cousins, and our cousin's cousins (fondly referred to as  "our extended Cousins").

I love you Uncle Sam and will miss you greatly.
