Obituary for Roger Holman

Roger Holman
Roger Holman, loving husband and father, passed away on November 5, 2018 at the age of 71. He was born on June 4, 1947 to Barbara and Malcolm Holman, spending his early years in Lexington, MA. Soon after high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1966 to 1970. After his return from Vietnam, he met his future wife, Susan, whom he married on June 26, 1971.

Professionally, Roger worked as an electrical engineer for about 35 years, designing air flow sensors and cooling systems for computers, and was granted several patents in circuitry boards. But his true talents included puzzles, creative problem solving, and completing all tasks, big and small with great integrity.

Roger, Susan, and their children spent time every summer on the coast of Maine, and he was determined to retire in the area. In 2013, he made that dream come through by moving to his beloved town of South Bristol, where he spent his remaining years.

He was a dedicated volunteer for the Damariscotta River Association (DRA), showing up for monthly trail work; his ideal day included a walk through one of the many nature preserves managed by the DRA, the Pemaquid Watershed Association, and the Boothbay Land Trust with his wife and two faithful friends, Beckett and Bailey (wag wag), followed by a visit to RoundTop for a vanilla and butterscotch sundae lunch. Roger also felt at home along the Saint John River in New Brunswick, Canada, where he would gather with his large extended family at his grandmother’s homestead and celebrate Canadian life.

Roger was a calm and gentle soul, was unfailingly kind, and made friends easily. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Susan Holman; one son, Eric Holman of Kingfield, ME; one daughter, Katie Warren, and son-in-law, Zach Warren of Seattle, WA; and four grandchildren, Luke, Molly, Jude, and Lavender.

Roger did not want a service, but we encourage celebrating his life by pausing to reflect on the beauty and complexity of nature. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to be made to the Damariscotta River Association, PO Box 333, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for his family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com.
