Obituary for Gladys Tappan

Gladys “Woody” Tappan, 84 of Bremen, passed away on the afternoon of August 27 at her home, with her daughter Barbara by her side. Born on January 10, 1933 in Norwood, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Leo and Gertrude Woodward.

Woody grew up in Massachusetts, attending local schools and graduating from Dedham High School in 1951. She went on to further her education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the Hickox School in Boston. While living in Massachusetts, she worked at Little, Brown and Company.

In 1953 she married Roger C. Tappan, and the couple raised a family together. Before moving to Maine, Woody lived in Marshfield, MA where she was an active member of the League of Women Voters and the Y - Sew What’s Group. She was a trustee of the Clift Rodgers Library, and was the founder of the Clift Rodgers Consignment Shop, where she volunteered and was the bookkeeper for several years. Woody was also a staunch supporter of the Home for Little Wanderers in Boston.

Upon their move to Maine, she was a longtime volunteer at the Miles Memorial Hospital, and the Hospital League’s annual rummage sale. She was also a member of the Muscongus and Bremen Patriotic Clubs.

Woody had many loves; she enjoyed a good game of bridge, and made beautiful braided and hooked rugs. She was an avid reader who frequented, and supported, the Bremen Library. She enjoyed doing the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle, which she confidently completed in ink.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roger Tappan in 2016.

She is survived by her three children, Susan Molina of Lynn, MA, Roger W. Tappan of Taunton, MA, and Barbara Tappan of Attleboro, MA; grandchildren, Crystal Molina-Arcand, Michelle Tappan, and Christopher Tappan; sister, Nancy W. Steele; as well as several cousins, nieces and a nephew.

Woody’s family would like to thank the staff of Cove’s Edge Skilled Nursing Facility, the hospice RN’s, Comfort Keepers, and the One2One Care staff for their compassionate care and assistance.

A private service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bremen Library, PO Box 163, Bremen, ME 04551.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for her family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com.
