Obituary for Ernest Oliver

Ernest Oliver
Ernest Allen “Ernie” Oliver Sr., 84, of Newcastle, died at home Sunday, Jan. 20, surrounded by family. His health had declined in recent months due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other ailments.

Ernie was born Sept. 12, 1934 in Augusta to Althea M. Oliver, the fourth of her seven children. He lived in Popham Beach until he was 14, when the family moved to Bath. He attended local schools.

He married Molly Hall on Jan. 22, 1956. They would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary Tuesday. They eventually moved to Newcastle, where he spent most of his life. He worked in local machine shops for many years, then as a caretaker and farmhand for more than 20 years, into his 80s.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked to play cards, including cribbage and poker. He was a fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics, and whichever team his children or grandchildren were playing for at any time. He and Molly attended countless games at local schools and around the state.

A grandfather of eight, great-grandfather of 14, and great-great-grandfather of one, Ernie was adored by all the children in the family and considered himself fortunate to have all the kids nearby.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Shelly; mother and stepfather, Althea and Bill Wallace; siblings, Leon Oliver and wife Kay, Merrill Oliver and wife June, and Gloria Wilson and husband Chester; sister-in-law, Judy Wallace; and brother-in-law, Colin Hall and wife Marcia.

His survivors include his wife, Molly Oliver, of Newcastle; sons, Ernest Allen Oliver Jr. (Allen) and wife Tara, of Nobleboro; Jimmy and wife Stacy, of Jefferson; a grandson he helped raise and thought of as a son, Jarrod Pinkham and wife Cheryl, of Jefferson; grandchildren, Rebekah Oliver, J.W. Oliver, Sean Oliver, Brittany Dunham, Nathan Riley, Morgan Riley, Cassie Reed, and Marcus Reed; great-grandchildren, Briana, Sawyer, Gavin, Zoe, John, Adrian, Maddison, Kaler, Hailey, Laila, Ryker, Callie, Harrison, and Miriam; great-great-granddaughter, Aubree; brother, Jack Wallace, of Georgia; sister, Linda Demery and husband Gerald, of Illinois; brother, Larry Wallace and wife Barbara, of Lisbon; sister-in-law, Judy Cheney and husband Bruce, of New Hampshire; brother-in-law, Jimmy Hall and wife Joan, of Damariscotta; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside service with family and friends will take place in the spring, the Rev. Susie Craig officiating. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
